           Machindragad Fort is located in the Kille-Machindragad village in Walwa taluk of Sangli district of Maharashtra state, India. Machindragad Fort is also called Kille-Machindragad. This fort is situated atop a pacific mountain outside the village. This is a Giridurg. It is close to Karad City. But it comes in Sangli district.

             You can bring your vehicles up to the top of this Machindragad fort. The car and bike road route is from Kille-Machindragad village. But please drive carefully and safely while coming. Because the road is very inclined. Your vehicle may reverse while climbing up and may skid while going down. So drive slowly and safely.

              Two separate trekking tracks have been built here for trek lovers to reach the Machindragad fort. One track is from Kille-Machindragad village and the other is from Yede-Machindra village. You can come walking comfortably. It’s an hour’s journey. Both trekking tracks are well-built and safe. But yet always trek with your friends’ group. Don’t try solo trekking on any fort.

History of Machindragad Fort, Kille-Machindragad

                 Machindragad Fort is a Giridurg means it is situated on the top of the mountain. This fort was built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1676. To protect Swarajya, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had built a series of forts. It is said that Machindragad Fort was the last fort in this fort chain.

          Machindragad Fort was built for surveillance. This means this fort was built to monitor the surrounding areas and keep an eye on the enemies.

      Machindragad Fort went into the hands of the Mughals in 1693, four years after the death of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj (Son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj). Then after the death of Aurangzeb, this fort again came under the control of the Maratha Empire. Finally, in 1818 this fort went into the hands of the British.

What to See in Machindragad Fort, Kille-Machindragad

               Now, this Machindragad Fort is no longer preserved in its original condition. Only some remains of the fort, embankment, bastions, and cannons remain. Their detailed information is here as below.

1) Entrance of the Machindragad Fort: This is the entrance of the Machindragad fort. As we already told you, the original fort is no longer preserved. This fort wall is renovated in this way.

2) Remains of Ancient Stone Crafts: Behind the entrance of the Machindragad fort, under a big tree you will find some beautiful stone crafts here. This includes Shivlinga, broken cannons, and other interesting artifacts.

3) Shri Machhindranath Temple: At the entrance of the Machindragad fort there is a small holy temple of Shri Machhindranath. Machhindranath was the founder of the Nath sect and was also the guru of Gorakshanath. There are also small temples of Shri Gorakshanath and Gahaninath here.

4) Cannons & Its Broken Parts: The cannons have been well placed on bullock carts in front of the Machhindranath temple. Also, there you will find some broken parts of cannons.

5) Ancient Inscription: You will find one ancient inscription on the stone deck under a tree in front of the Machhindranath temple. Maybe it will be in Devanagari. If it was in Hindi or Marathi, we could have read it easily.

6) Embankment & Bastions: In some places near the bastions the embankment of the fort is also renovated with stones. A total of 4 bastions are there in good condition. Two bastions have beautiful viewpoint towers. The remaining two bastions have saffron flags. From these bastions, you can have a wonderful view of the surrounding nature.

7) Old Deep Well: You will find one old deep well exactly behind the Machhindranath temple. An interesting fact about this well is it is made by cutting big rocks. It must have been made for drinking water.

8) Old Water Tanks: You will find small small square shaped underground water tanks on the Machindragad fort. These are made to store rainwater. These tanks are the basis for water here.

9) Lime Stone Crusher: There is one old lime stone crusher or lime pressor on the Machindranath fort behind the Macchindranath temple. In the old days, this lime pressor is used to prepare the lime by crushing the limestones. This lime was used in the construction of forts.

10) Two Unknown Tombs: Behind the Macchindranath temple, near the third bastion you will find two unknown tombs together. But nothing much is known about these two tombs. People guess that these are the tombs of fort guards. But there is no proof for this guess.

How to Reach Machindragad Fort, Kille-Machindragad

                    Machindragad Fort is located in the Kille-Machindragad village in Walwa taluk of Sangli district of Maharashtra state, India. It is close to Karad City. But it comes in Sangli district. Machindragad Fort is around 58 km from the district headquarters Sangli and just 20 km from Karad. Two trekking routes are there. One is from Kille-Machindragad village and the other is from Yede-Machindra village. The car route is from Kille-Machindragad village only.
