Ukhalu Waterfall, also known as Ambai Waterfall and Mhatar Kada Waterfall, is one of the most unexplored waterfalls hidden inside the dense forests of Chandoli National Park in Shahuwadi Taluka, Kolhapur district, Maharashtra. Located in the buffer zone of the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, this hidden waterfall is surrounded by lush forests, mountain trails, paddy fields, streams, and rich wildlife. Unlike popular tourist waterfalls, Ukhalu Waterfall remains untouched by commercialization, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers, trekkers, wildlife enthusiasts, and wildlife photographers looking to experience the raw beauty of the Chandoli forest. The journey to this waterfall is as memorable as the destination itself, offering an unforgettable adventure through one of Maharashtra’s richest biodiversity hotspots.
Speciality of Ukhalu Waterfall
Ukhalu Waterfall is famous for its untouched natural beauty and adventurous forest trek through the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve. During the monsoon, water falls from a height of approximately 70–90 meters, creating a spectacular white stream surrounded by mist-covered mountains and evergreen forests. The route passes through dense jungle, terraced paddy fields, slippery trails, small water streams, and a sacred forest temple known as Ambai Devarai, dedicated to Goddess Bhavani. Visitors can also witness the incredible biodiversity of Chandoli, including Sonki flowers, Wild Balsam species (Terda), butterflies, the Green Vine Snake, the Brahminy Blind Snake, and many other species found in the UNESCO-listed Western Ghats ecosystem. The waterfall offers a true offbeat experience with no shops, platforms, railings, or mobile network, allowing visitors to connect completely with nature.

Best Time to Visit Ukhalu Waterfall
The best time to visit Ukhalu Waterfall is August to October, when the monsoon transforms the entire valley into a lush green paradise. This is also the season when thousands of Sonki wildflowers bloom across the mountain slopes, adding vibrant yellow colours to the landscape, while different species of Balsam flowers bloom in shades of pink and purple throughout the forest. Avoid visiting during heavy rainfall, as the trekking trail becomes extremely slippery and risky due to mud, overflowing streams, and steep forest paths.
